Three Ways to Get Involved

Three Ways to Get Involved with the Community

Sequoia Parent Teacher Organization (SPTO) is a non-profit organization made up of compassionate Sequoia community volunteers to perform three critical functions at the school:

  • Volunteer outreach

  • Fundraising for key aspects of the school experience like enrichment learning

  • Supporting and funding community-building events

We are not a dues paying group, so all are welcome to join and hear a principal’s update, vote on board items, and participate in community discussion at our meetings every third Wednesday of the month. Let us know if you need any translation services or special accommodations to participate and we’ll try our best to meet those needs.

Email our SPTO Chair at sptocochair@gmail.com if you have questions or are interested in joining the future board.

The Sequoia Parent Teacher Organization (SPTO) communicates using the Sequoia Community Google Group (mailing list) to help keep Sequoia families informed and connected. The purpose of this Google group is for parent/caregiver communication. Sign up Here!

Official school communication will come through the Principal and the Sequoia Front Office via Parent Square.

A.C.O.R.N.S Club (A Cool Organization of Really Nice Sequoia-Caregivers) has a long history at Sequoia Elementary and the Dimond neighborhood to organize many community gatherings. They meet on the second Thursday of each month to plan events like:

  • Welcome and End of Year BBQs

  • School Work Days

  • Harvest Festival

  • Movie Nights

  • Pancake Breakfast

  • Dimond Oak-toberfest

  • Auction and Family Dance

This is the group to join if you are interested in bringing some of these neighborhood friendly events back. Email Nick Miura at nicholas.miura@gmail.com with any future event ideas or questions.

The School Site Council (SSC), is a committee of caregivers and school staff, led by the principal, Dr. Payne. They meet on the 3rd Mondays of each month for an hour to discuss students’ academic growth and social-emotional health including:

  • Review the school site plans, relevant testing data, ask questions and provide feedback

  • Evaluate the school as a whole and not individual students

  • Discuss development of targeted groups of students (such as English Language Learners or students with IEPs) to identify and address any gaps in opportunities for these students

Everyone is welcome to attend the meetings, but they are required to have five committed caregiver volunteers to be at all monthly meetings (9 total) with at least one bilingual caregiver to represent our English Language Learner students. No special experience necessary. If you are willing and able to help this committee, please attend the first meeting of every school year to be elected to this council. Let us know if you need any translation services or special accommodations to participate and we’ll try our best to meet those needs.
