SPTO Sub-Committees

Interested caregivers can come together around a shared passion as part of the Sequoia Parent Teacher Organization (SPTO) to help the school and make a difference. These sub-committees may work on a specific project or address many needs centered around a theme.

Here's more information the committees currently working to support Sequoia in specific ways. Interested in working on a topic or project not seen here? Contact the SPTO cochairs at sptocochair@gmail.com

Traffic & Safety

The Traffic & Safety committee seeks to make the area around Sequoia safer for commuting to and from school, especially for walking and biking. Each year, goals are set by active members and can change depending on what caregivers are passionate about.

Since the committee started in the '23-'24 school year, the group has achieved many things including:

  • Used SPTO funding to create and install sandwich boards indicating traffic flow and speed limit, traffic cones, and safety flags
  • Held a safety walk with leaders from the city, OUSD, and the school to discuss partnerships for improving traffic safety near Sequoia
  • Created and submitted a City of Oakland Capital Improvement Program project
  • Advocated with OakDOT, resulting in OakDOT installing painted median and delineators on Lincoln Ave at Scenic Ave crosswalk (thanks to D4 Rep Janani R!)
  • Adding a pedestrian bench at the Lincoln Ave bus stop.

Climate Resilience

The Climate Resilience Committee seeks to support Sequoia in all things sustainability. Right now, the group is focused on mitigating current and future health and safety risks by improving the temperature experienced (it's too hot during the fall!)

This group also works to support campus greening initiatives or add resources to the green spaces already on campus.

Interested in another aspect of sustainability (like plastic waste reduction?) but don't see that being tackled? We are in need of other leaders to make a difference!
